Introduction:
In my spare time, I have completed a online "Visual Design Principle" course from UC Berkley Extension to strengthen my ability to create instructional materials that are not only effective but also engaging and visually appealing. As an instructional designer, I understand that strong visual design enhances learner comprehension, improves retention, and increases overall engagement. By expanding my design skills, I can apply principles of layout, color, typography, and accessibility to develop learning experiences that communicate clearly and resonate with diverse audiences.
It was a fun and inspiring class where I not only strengthened my own design skills but also learned from my peers’ approaches to UI and visual storytelling. Seeing how others applied design principles gave me new perspectives and ideas that I can integrate into my instructional design practice!
Project: Visual Design Principles Poster
For this project, I created a poster that demonstrated key visual design principles while incorporating elements of Chinese culture. Using Adobe Illustrator, I designed custom shapes and organized them into a compelling, hierarchically instructive composition. By applying balance, contrast, alignment, and repetition, I ensured that the design both guided the viewer’s attention and conveyed cultural richness. This project allowed me to merge technical design skills with cultural storytelling, enhancing my ability to create instructional visuals that are engaging, inclusive, and memorable.
Project: Logo
I designed a logo for the First Americans Museum that draws inspiration from the traditional Native headdress, which is also reflected in the museum’s architectural design. Using Adobe Illustrator, I translated these cultural and structural elements into a clean, modern logo that honors heritage while maintaining visual simplicity. This project emphasized the importance of aligning design choices with cultural meaning, audience identity, and institutional branding.
Project: Website Design
I designed the homepage, About page, and Gallery page for the First Americans Museum website. Using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, I developed layouts that balanced cultural storytelling with user-friendly navigation. The design highlighted the museum’s unique architecture and mission while ensuring visual consistency, readability, and accessibility across pages. This project strengthened my ability to apply visual design principles to digital platforms and create cohesive experiences that communicate identity and engage diverse audiences.
